It’s that time again: time to deep clean the house! You won’t need to conduct a deep cleaning of your house every day or week, but you will need to deep clean your home on a regular basis. This might be four or two times a year depending on your living situation.
A house with children and pets, for example, might require more frequent deep cleanings than a house with only one individual living in it. When it’s time to deep clean your home, there are a few cleaning tips to keep in mind. With all the right housekeeping tips, you can clean and organize like a pro!
To start your house cleaning, continue reading below. Here’s our guide on how to deep clean your house room by room.
The Bedrooms
Where should you start? With so many different rooms in the house, the starting place should be a room that makes sense for you. For example, you might want to start at one end of the house and work your way through.
You can also start with the bedrooms and then take it room by room. When cleaning the bedrooms, start by removing anything that doesn’t belong in them. These might be bowls, remote controls, and other items.
Put these items back in their rightful place. Then, dust everything starting from the top and working your way down. Don’t forget to wipe down light fixtures and window coverings as well.
Disinfect all surfaces that are touched every day (light switches, doorknobs, draw handles, and more). Remove sheets from your bed and place them in the laundry. Finish cleaning by vacuuming and organizing the space.
The Bathrooms
When you’re ready to tackle the bathrooms, be sure to start with wiping down the light fixtures and the vents. Dust everything from top to bottom. Scrub the shower and shower door.
Make sure to clean mold and limescale build-up. Scrub the toilet, walls, and baseboards. Remove any items that don’t belong and empty out the trash.
Open the cabinets and start organizing. Check expiration dates on medication and toss anything out that’s no longer good. Remove everything and then place it back in the cabinets in an organized fashion.
Wash the floors and then dry with a clean towel. If you have a shower curtain, then make sure to toss it in the laundry as well.
The Kitchen/Dining Room
To begin deep cleaning the kitchen and dining room, you should start with the same type of method used in the other rooms. Start from the top and work your way down. This is true for dusting and wiping down surfaces.
Then, take anything out of this area that doesn’t belong there. After that, you can begin cleaning out the cabinets, pantry, and refrigerator. Take everything out and toss out anything that’s expired.
Before returning the items, make sure you organize them. Small organizer bins come in handy for organizing items in your pantry, cabinets, and refrigerator. Wipe down the counters and the cabinet doors.
Clean out the microwave and other appliances. Sanitize all surfaces touched on a daily basis and then sweep, vacuum, and mop the floors.
The Living Room
Your living room most likely has the most foot traffic out of all other rooms in the house. The living room sees sticky hands, dirty feet, and lots of mess on a regular basis. To start cleaning your living room, remove anything that doesn’t belong.
Then, Dust everything, including lampshades, curtains, the television, and the walls. Next, move on to the windows. Clean the window screens, windowsills, and glass panels.
Vacuum and wash couch cushions when possible. Vacuum the baseboards, the carpeting, and the rug. Move furniture to vacuum underneath. Remove scuff marks from the walls and apply a fresh coat of paint where needed.
The Yard
Don’t forget to clean the yard as well. Take a step outside and start clearing out any debris you might find. Toss all fallen branches, twigs, and leaves.
Remove any dead plants or flowers. Put fresh mulch down in the garden beds and plant new flowers if needed. Mow the lawn, trim the trees, and clean out the gutters.
Daily Cleaning Tasks
After the entire house is clean, it’s ideal to have a list of daily cleaning tasks to complete in order to keep the house clean on a regular basis. Once you develop a good cleaning schedule, it’ll become much easier to conduct deep cleaning when it comes the time to do so.
Some daily tasks to keep in mind are as follows:
- Make your bed each morning
- Clean dishes after eating
- Clean the kitchen sink at the end of the day
- Clear off all counters to keep a clean look
Create a list of daily cleaning tasks and write them down in a place where everyone can see them. Keep up with these tasks to reduce the amount of deep cleaning you’ll need to do in the future.
